Instructional Frameworks

Clear expectations. Proven strategies. Consistent instruction across every classroom in Morgan County Schools.

Our Instructional Foundation

In Morgan County Schools, our instructional approach is built on strong Tier I classroom practices. We believe that the most effective way to improve student outcomes is through high-quality, engaging, standards-based instruction delivered consistently across all classrooms.

Our work is guided by the Five to Thrive framework, supported by research from Marzano and Hattie, and grounded in the Alabama Course of Study. These frameworks provide clarity and consistency while allowing teachers the flexibility to meet the needs of their students.

Five to Thrive: Our Core Instructional Model

1. Clear Learning Targets

Students should always know what they are learning and why it matters.

  • Post and communicate learning objectives
  • Align lessons to standards
  • Define success criteria

Look For: Students can explain what they are learning without prompting.

2. Student Engagement

Students are actively participating in meaningful learning.

  • Structured discussion and collaboration
  • High levels of student talk
  • Active participation strategies

Look For: All students are engaged—not just compliant.

3. Checks for Understanding

Teachers continuously monitor student learning.

  • Frequent formative checks
  • Intentional questioning strategies
  • Real-time adjustments to instruction

Look For: Teachers responding to student needs during the lesson.

4. Feedback & Adjustment

Students receive timely, actionable feedback.

  • Specific, standards-based feedback
  • Opportunities for revision
  • Adjustments based on student performance

Look For: Feedback that moves learning forward.

5. Purposeful Practice

Students practice skills with intention and accountability.

  • Guided and independent practice
  • Alignment to learning targets
  • Opportunities for mastery

Look For: Practice that reinforces learning—not busy work.

Hattie’s Visible Learning

John Hattie’s research identifies instructional practices that have the greatest impact on student learning. Our focus is on high-impact strategies that consistently produce results.

High-Impact Strategies
